Hiccup knocked at Rapunzel’s door with a sigh. What hurt almost as much as knowing Rapunzel had been cursed; was that he was the last to know, and Rapunzel hadn’t even tried to tell him. A small patter of feet scurried to the door, before a low creaking sound emitted from the opening door. Rapunzel’s green eyes were visible through the dark of the home. A smell of dirt and blood drifted to his nose. Despite her shining eyes there was very little of Rapunzel’s face clear.
“I said go away Hiccup.” Rapunzel didn’t sound angry or frustrated. Just incredibly sad and anguished like she hadn’t slept for days.
“I need to talk with you. Why didn’t you tell me?” Hiccup demanded, throwing his hand against the door frame in frustration. “I’m your brother.” Rapunzel sighed, closing her eyes tightly. “What do you know?”
“You have to let me in first.”
Rapunzel shook her head furiously. “I’m not doing that Hiccup. What do you know?”
“That Jackson cursed you. That you attacked Andy.” The words hurt to say. Hiccup’s sister. His bigger sister who he looked up to, was cowered behind a door and not denying her sick new powers.
“And that’s why you have to stay away Hiccup.” Rapunzel quivered, knees buckling and eyes watering. The fowl words continued to flow. “If you stay around me I’ll kill you. Because you mean so much to me, that when I change…my powers will be stronger.”
Hiccup shook his head. He wanted to reach out and hold his sister. But he couldn’t. Suddenly his powers weren’t fun anymore. They didn’t give him a topic for talking with friends, they didn’t teach him a lesson, they kept him from taking his big sister in his arms and giving her the hug she needed. “Rapunzel. I can protect myself. If you shut that door I won’t stop. I’ll keep coming back even if I have to burn the door down.” His voice cracked towards the end. He felt so weak and powerless.
“I really want you to hug me. I want to go back to when we were kids. I want to tell you everything again Hiccup.” She opened the door wider. Hiccup was shocked to see her new appearance. Rapunzel’s hair was cut and dyed darker, her clothes were black and her hands were dirty and caked in blood. “Please hug me?” Hiccup pulled her into his arms, trying to focus his mind on keeping the heat away from her. Rapunzel’s nails digging into his shoulders and her sharp cries of pain proved that his powers were too strong to control like that. Rapunzel whimpered in his tight grip. He pushed her away for her safety. Rapunzel’s arms were red and raw looking, not completely burnt but hurt.
“Rapunzel let me help you.” Rapunzel looked to the sky. It was darkening to a deep shade of blue.
“Leave for now Hiccup. I’ll tell you everything. But leave.”
At first Hiccup hesitated, but eventually agreed to come back again later. Once he left Rapunzel disappeared behind the door, slamming it shut and securing the heavy locks. Her breathing quickened and she ravenously scratched at the door. Rapunzel’s eyes glowed red, her hair fell over her eyes as she banged against the door to escape.
It was night. In the morning she prayed she’d wake up with clean hands.
