It wasn't true. It couldn't be true. It was a lie. Obviously it was a lie.
Rapunzel tried to convince herself this as she pounded on the door. Hiccup reached out to hold her but remembered his touch would only burn her. He couldn't stop her from kicking at the door like a her mother was trapped on the other side.
"Wheatley open the door!" her face was emotionless but her hands and feet told it all. "Wheatley?!" her voice cracked slightly towards the end. "Andy?"
Hiccup frowned, stepping forward. "Just because it's an emergency." Hiccup gripped the door handle. It melted like candlewax and dripped onto Rapunzel's shoes. She paid it no mind and shoved the door forward, all calmness in her face lost and switched with desperation. Hiccup followed behind as she fled up the stairs, screaming Wheatley's name.
The door to their room opened with a creak. In the distance you could hear the beating of a butterflies wings.
There they were.
Emotionless.
Still.
They almost looked like corpses.
There was a heavy bang.
Rapunzel had fallen to her knees.
"Rapunzel-" Hiccup realized he had nothing to say. There was nothing to say. They had heard the rumors. Comatose.
"Wheatley." Rapunzel's hands reached out to the fractured robot, her trembling hands stroking his metal base. "Wheatley i'm here. It's me, Rapunzel. Please Wheatley wake up." Small gasps broke through the silence. They belonged to Rapunzel. She sobbed, wrapping her arms around the robot like her life depended on it. "Wheatley you're going to be alright. You're going to be fine." Sobbing's turned into screams. Screams turned into unbearable silence. "Please don't leave me Wheatley." it almost came in a whisper. When she spoke again, it was neither a whisper or a sob. As close to silence as possible as she kissed the top of Wheatley's head she let it out. "I love you Wheatley."
Rapunzel covered her face in the blankets.
Hiccup could only watch.
